Settlement Conference Checklist

The Settlement Conference is a mandatory step in any Small Claims case. It's your chance to settle the dispute before the case goes to trial.

Pre-Conference Checklist

  • Review Your Case: Re-read the Plaintiff's Claim and your Defence carefully.
  • Gather Documents: Have copies of all your evidence (contracts, photos, invoices) ready to show the judge.
  • Prepare Your Opening: Have a clear 2-3 minute summary of your position and why you believe the case should be settled.
  • Know Your 'Bottom Line': Determine the minimum amount you are willing to accept or the maximum you are willing to pay.

At the Conference

The judge will not make a final ruling. They will listen to both sides and suggest a compromise. Anything said during the conference is confidential and cannot be used later in trial if you don't reach a settlement.
