For subcontractors

Work with us, one job at a time

We are a licensed paralegal firm. Some of our clients’ matters need other businesses and professionals: someone to serve a claim, translate a document, commission an affidavit, keep the books or file papers at a court office. If you offer services like these, you can apply to be one of the people we call on, for specific jobs on terms agreed in writing.

Who we are

The firm you would be working with, so you can check it before you apply.

NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is a paralegal professional corporation in Pickering, Ontario. Its principal, Mo. Farooqui, is a paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. We act for clients only in the matters a licensed paralegal is permitted to handle.

This page is for independent businesses and self-employed professionals who do specific jobs for the firm. It is not a job posting: for paid roles on our payroll, see Careers.

Work we may ask for

The kinds of job a paralegal firm gives to other businesses. The list is a guide, not a limit: firms and agencies are welcome to apply, and so is anyone who offers another service a paralegal firm may need.

Process serving

Serving claims, applications, notices and other documents on people and businesses, with proof of service, such as an affidavit of service, that meets the court's or tribunal's rules.

Translation and interpreting

Translating documents for clients' court, tribunal and immigration matters, and interpreting at meetings and, where the court or tribunal permits it, at hearings. Some matters need a certified translation.

Commissioning and notarizing

Taking affidavits and statutory declarations, or notarizing documents, by a commissioner or notary public authorized in Ontario, for example for a client who cannot come to our office.

Bookkeeping

Keeping the firm's books, including the trust records the Law Society's By-Law 9 requires, under the direction of our licensee, who stays responsible for them.

Courier and court filing

Delivering documents, and filing them at court and tribunal offices on our instructions.

Firms and other services

Businesses that provide these services with their own staff, and anyone who offers another service a paralegal firm may need. Tell us what you do.

What we ask of subcontractors

What we expect of anyone who does a job for us, and how each job is set up and paid.

  • You run your own business, or work for yourself: you decide how each job is done and use your own equipment.
  • You have the skills, and any licence, certification or appointment, that the work needs, and you keep them current.
  • You do each job carefully and on time, as the court, tribunal or law requires: for example, with proper proof of service.
  • You keep our clients’ information confidential, and sign our confidentiality agreement before you see any of it.
  • You contact our clients only as we direct, and you do not offer them your own services for the matters you work on.
  • You keep insurance that suits your work, and any WSIB coverage the law requires for your business, and show us proof when we ask.

Each job is offered and confirmed in writing, and you may say no to a job before you accept it.

How each job works

  • Before the first job, we agree written terms with you: the services, your rates, how you invoice us and when we pay, insurance and confidentiality.
  • We confirm each job by email, with what is needed and by when. If you know anyone involved in a job, tell us before you start, so we can give it to someone else.
  • We pay the rate agreed (per job, by the hour or a fixed fee), plus expenses we approve in advance. You invoice us, adding HST if you are registered for it.
  • Where a job touches a client’s legal matter, you work under the direction of our licensee, who stays responsible to the client. You do not give legal advice or represent our clients.
  • We pay for the work you do, never for referring clients to us: the Law Society’s rules do not allow a paralegal to share fees with, or pay for referrals to, anyone who is not a licensee.

No fees to apply, and no obligation either way

There is nothing to pay to apply or to be on our list: no listing, subscription or sign-up fees. Being on our list does not commit you to take any job, and it is not a promise of any work. How often we need a service depends on our clients’ matters, so we cannot say how often, or whether, we will call on you.

We choose who does each job by what the job needs: the service, the place, the language, the timing and who is available. Being on our list is not a job offer or employment, and you remain an independent business.

General information only

This page describes how we work with subcontractors. It is not legal, tax or employment advice, and it does not by itself create an agreement, a job or any other relationship. Whether someone is an independent business or an employee depends on how the work is actually done, and each business remains responsible for its own taxes, HST, insurance, WSIB coverage and any licence its work needs. We work on Ontario matters only. Through this website, please send only what we ask for, and never anyone else’s confidential information.
