From the Ministry of the Attorney General’s tables, last updated September 2, 2026. For causes of action that arose on or before October 23, 1989, the prejudgment rate is the postjudgment rate.

Good to know
  • Both kinds are simple interest: the amount × the yearly rate ÷ 365 × the number of days. This is the Ministry's own method.
  • Prejudgment interest runs from the day the cause of action arose to the date of the judgment, at the rate for the quarter the claim was issued (ss. 127 and 128). You have to ask for it in your claim, or the judgment won't include it.
  • Postjudgment interest runs from the date of the judgment on everything owing under it, costs included, at the rate for the quarter the judgment was made, until it is paid (s. 129).
  • If a contract or another law sets the interest rate, that rate applies instead (ss. 128(4)(g) and 129(5)).
  • The court can refuse interest, or allow a higher or lower rate or a different period, when it considers it just (s. 130).
  • The rate tables here run to Q4 2026. After that, check the Ministry's page for the newest rates.
