For Ontario lawyers

Referrals and agency work with Ontario lawyers

We are a licensed paralegal firm. When a client’s matter is one a licensed paralegal is not permitted to handle, we can recommend Ontario lawyers to the client under the Law Society of Ontario’s referral rules. When a lawyer needs a defined task done that a licensed paralegal is permitted to do, the lawyer can instruct us as agent.

Who we are

The firm you would be dealing with, so you can check it before you apply.

NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is a paralegal professional corporation in Pickering, Ontario. Its principal, Mo. Farooqui, is a paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. We act for clients only in the matters a licensed paralegal is permitted to handle.

We are not a law firm, and we do not hold ourselves out as lawyers. This site is not a lawyer directory or marketplace: lawyers do not buy listings or advertise here, and we choose whom to recommend to each client.

Areas on our lawyer fees list

Some matters in these areas need a lawyer. When a client’s matter, or part of it, is one a licensed paralegal is not permitted to handle, we tell the client and can recommend lawyers who practise in that area. Our Lawyer Fees page shows clients typical Ontario lawyer fees for 2008 services; the number on each area is how many are listed. The list is a guide, not a limit: lawyers in other areas are welcome to apply.

What we ask of lawyers we refer to

What we expect of any lawyer we recommend to a client, and how a referral fee works when there is one.

  • You are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to practise law, and your licence is in good standing.
  • You have the competence and the capacity to take on the kind of matter we refer, and you run your own conflict check before you accept it.
  • You get in touch with the client within a reasonable time once they agree to be referred, or let the client and us know if you cannot act.
  • You agree your own fee and retainer with the client, and once retained you are responsible for the client’s matter.
  • Where a referral fee is agreed, you follow the Law Society’s rules for it, including the written Referral Agreement.

You may decline any referral, for any reason.

If a referral fee applies

  • We recommend at least two lawyers to the client where we reasonably can, and the client decides whether to retain anyone.
  • The fee is set out in the Law Society’s Referral Agreement, signed by the client, by you and by us, and the client receives the Law Society’s “What Clients Need to Know” sheet on referral fees.
  • You pay it out of your own fee, only after the client has paid you. It is never added to the client’s bill, and it is shown on your account to the client.
  • It must be fair and reasonable, and the rules cap it: for example, at most $3,000 on $20,000 of fees and $10,000 on $100,000, and never more than $25,000. The cap is a ceiling, not a set rate.
  • Some referrals carry no fee. The rules do not allow one in some cases, for example when we refer a matter because a conflict of interest stops us from acting, and you may simply prefer referrals with no referral fee.

Referral fees for lawyers · Our Referral Fees Policy

No fees to apply, and no obligation either way

There is nothing to pay to apply or to be on our list of lawyers we refer to: no listing, subscription or sign-up fees. Approval does not commit you to take any matter, and it is not a promise that any referrals will follow. You can decline any referral, and we may decide that a matter is better referred elsewhere.

We recommend lawyers based on suitability for the client’s matter. Agreeing to pay a referral fee is never a condition of receiving referrals, and approval is not a partnership or affiliation.

General information only

This page describes how we work with lawyers. It is not legal advice, and it does not by itself create a retainer, an agency arrangement or a referral. Each licensee remains responsible for their own conflict checks, retainer, supervision and other obligations under the Law Society of Ontario’s rules. We work on Ontario matters only. Through this website, please send only what we ask for to run our conflict check and understand the request, and keep the confidential details of a client’s matter until we have spoken.
