When you have an invoice from us for work we have already done, you may be able to pay it over time with Affirm or Klarna at checkout. Each is a separate company, and the one you choose decides whether to approve you and on what terms. You pay the same price however you pay.
Affirm. Rates from 0-31.99% APR (subject to provincial regulatory limitations). Payment options through Affirm Canada Holdings Ltd. ("Affirm") are subject to an eligibility check and depend on purchase amount, payment terms, vary by merchant, and may not be available in all provinces/territories. Not all customers will be eligible for 0% APR. Minimum purchase and down payment may be required. NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is not a lender and makes no credit decisions.
Klarna. See Canadian payment terms at klarna.com/ca/paylaterin4. A higher initial payment may be required for some consumers. NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is not a lender and makes no credit decisions.
This page is general information. It is not legal or financial advice.
Four steps, from your invoice to the provider’s decision.
Paying over time is only for invoices for work we have already done for you under your signed retainer. When we issue one, we mark it as for work already done, and only an invoice marked that way can be paid over time, once we have sent it to you. Your invoice shows the amount, with HST.
Use the payment link in the invoice we email you, or our Pay page: there, choose “Legal services invoice” and enter your invoice number and the email address we have on file for you. On the secure checkout page that follows, choose Affirm or Klarna if it is offered for your payment. It is offered only for payments that qualify (see below).
You apply yourself, on your own phone or computer, and the provider you chose runs its own eligibility check. Our staff cannot apply for you or fill in the application, and we do not give advice about the loan.
If you are approved, the provider shows you the options it can offer you, with their terms and payment schedule, before you accept. You can say no and pay another way. If you accept, the provider pays us for the invoice, and you repay the provider under your agreement with it.
Checkout lists each one that can be offered for your payment. The choice is yours, and you can always pay by card instead.
Paying over time is for fees we have earned and billed. Money paid before the work is done goes to our trust account, as the Law Society requires.
Paying over time is optional, and borrowing can cost more than paying at once. Take the time you need to read the provider’s terms. We cannot advise you on whether a loan is right for you. If you are finding it hard to pay an invoice, please talk to us before it is due.
Affirm Canada Holdings Ltd. (“Affirm”) or Klarna Canada Limited (“Klarna”), whichever you choose. We are not a lender and we make no credit decisions. Any loan is a separate agreement between you and the provider, and the provider pays us through our payment processor, Stripe.
No. The provider checks each application and decides whether to approve it and which options to offer. Not everyone is approved, and the options you are offered may differ from someone else's. If you are not approved, you can still pay your invoice another way.
It depends on the provider and on the amount you pay at checkout, HST included. Affirm can be offered for payments of CA$50 to CA$30,000, and Klarna's Pay in 4 for payments of up to CA$1,500. Which options a provider offers depends on the amount and on its own eligibility check.
That depends on the option the provider offers you, and the provider shows you its terms before you accept. Affirm’s range of rates in Canada is in its disclosure on this page, and Klarna’s Canadian payment terms are at klarna.com/ca/paylaterin4. You pay us the same price however you pay.
Possibly. The provider decides, based on the amount and its own check: Affirm may ask for a down payment, and Klarna may ask some customers for a higher first payment. Either one tells you before you accept.
No. Applying with Affirm or Klarna has nothing to do with whether we act for you. Paying over time is only for invoices for work we have already done, so it comes after we have agreed to act for you. Being approved or declined by the provider does not change your retainer or our duties to you.
No. You complete the application yourself, on your own device. Our staff cannot fill it in or apply for you, and we cannot advise you on whether to borrow. Questions about the application go to the provider.
Through our checkout, the provider you choose receives what it needs to process the payment, such as your name, contact details, billing address, the amount and the invoice number. Where paying over time is offered, the checkout names the payment only as legal services from our firm, with the invoice number, and does not say what your matter is about. What you give the provider when you apply is covered by the provider's own privacy policy.
If we refund all or part of a payment you made through Affirm or Klarna, the refund goes back through that provider, which applies it under your agreement with it. A refund of a payment made this way is never given as store credit or as credit for future work.
