We are a licensed paralegal firm in Pickering. Licensed paralegals can work with us as self-employed independent contractors: you provide legal services under your own licence on NEO matters, NEO bills and collects the fees, and you receive a share of what is collected. A monthly desk fee covers your workspace, the firm’s systems and support.
The firm you would be working with, so you can check it before you apply.
NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is a paralegal professional corporation in Pickering, Ontario. Its principal, Mo. Farooqui, is a paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. The firm provides legal services only through licensees, and only in the matters a licensed paralegal is permitted to handle.
We are not a law firm, and we do not hold ourselves out as lawyers. Contractors keep their own licence and their own professional responsibility. Working with us does not make you a shareholder or give you any ownership in the firm.
Licensed paralegals who want to run their own files, with the firm’s systems behind them.
Applications are open. We read each one as it arrives and take on contractors only when we have the room and the work to support them, so we may not be able to offer a start date straight away.
A person at NEO reads every application. We do not use AI or any automated tool to screen or choose applicants.
Four parts. These are NEO’s standard terms; the final terms are the ones written in your Independent Contractor Agreement.
On matters that come to NEO and that you accept, 50% of the net fees NEO collects is your share and 50% stays with NEO.
When a client you introduce retains NEO, 90% of the net fees collected is your share and 10% stays with NEO. It is a NEO matter like any other: conflict check first, NEO retainer, NEO billing.
$250 a month plus 13% HST ($282.50) for your workspace, the firm’s systems and support. NEO waives it in full for any month with fewer than 5 qualifying firm-sourced matters, and there is none for your partial first month.
Your share of the fees collected in a month is paid by the 15th of the next month, with a Payment Statement listing each matter, its share and any desk fee.
Excluded work (work you and NEO agree is excluded from the fee share) is 100% yours. Only the fee part of each payment is shared: every client payment is applied to HST first, then to disbursements, then to fees. Illustrations are arithmetic on assumed fees, not a forecast: what you earn depends on the files you receive and accept, the fees NEO collects and your own work, and NEO does not guarantee any number of files or any income. See the full terms and a calculator.
You practise on your own account. Here is what that means day to day.
You accept or decline every file offered to you, on whether it suits your practice, your competence and your capacity.
You decide when and where you work on your files, within the client’s instructions and court and tribunal deadlines.
You provide legal services under your own P1 licence and keep full professional responsibility for your files.
Emails you send clients from the portal go out when you send them. They are not held for an administrator’s approval.
Your share is worked out on fees NEO actually collects, and each month’s Payment Statement lists every matter so you can check each figure.
Either of us can end the agreement with 30 days’ written notice, and you are still paid your share of fees collected later for work you did.
You provide legal services through NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation, on NEO files. The fees are NEO’s fees, shared with you under your written agreement, and that means:
The rules behind the model, with links to the Law Society’s own pages.
The areas on our services and prices list that are within the paralegal scope of practice. The list is a guide, not a limit or a forecast: matters are offered only within the paralegal scope and your own competence, and we can’t say how many will come in any area.
What the desk fee and the firm’s share pay for, as it stands today.
A workspace at our office, Unit 236, 1099 Kingston Road, Pickering, ON L1V 1B5.
A NEO portal account for the matters you work on: cases, calendar, deadlines, tasks, documents, time records and messages in one place.
Court forms, letters and drafting with AI assistance, document review, a case-law library and Ontario and federal statutes. You review, and are responsible for, anything you use.
NEO’s intake forms and firm-wide conflict check on every new matter, and retainer agreements signed electronically.
Clients sign agreements, share documents, send messages, book appointments and pay invoices in NEO’s client portal.
NEO prepares the invoices, takes payment (including by card online through Stripe) and keeps the trust records. Each month you get a Payment Statement and a desk fee notice by email.
See everything you get, and what you bring yourself.
Most of this is what the Law Society already requires of every licensee. The rest keeps each file in order.
Nothing is agreed until the written agreement is signed, and either of us can stop before then.
Tell us about your licence, the areas you practise in and where you work. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
Someone at NEO reads it and checks your standing on the Law Society directory. We reply by email, whatever the answer.
If it looks like a fit, we arrange a call to talk through the files you take, how the fee share works and any questions you have.
You show us proof of professional liability insurance that meets the Law Society’s By-Law 6 and names you as an insured, with at least $1,000,000 per claim and $2,000,000 in the aggregate. We check the names on your current client list against NEO’s records for conflicts, as the Paralegal Rules of Conduct on changing firms (rule 3.05) require, and ask only for what that check needs.
We send you an Independent Contractor Agreement and a Confidentiality Agreement. Take the time you need, and your own legal or tax advice if you wish. Nothing is agreed until both of us sign.
You receive an email to set your password for the NEO portal, where the matters you accept appear.
You can pre-authorize a card for desk fees through a private billing link, adding the card on Stripe’s secure page. Nothing is charged when you add it, and the first desk fee that could apply is for your first full calendar month.
Add your relationship with NEO in the Business Relationships section of LSO Connects. Which work status applies to you is for you to settle with the Law Society.
Paralegals who hold a P1 licence from the Law Society of Ontario and are in good standing. We check every applicant on the Law Society’s public directory before going further. Ontario lawyers have their own page: For Lawyers.
Not for the fee share yet. Only licensees can provide legal services, so files are offered only to P1 licensees in good standing. You are welcome to apply once you are licensed. We can’t promise a placement or a start date to anyone. If your program approves a supervised field or co-op placement for credit, see For Students.
No. We look at your Law Society licence and standing, the areas you practise in and whether the files suit your competence. We don’t ask where you gained your experience.
No. A person at NEO reads every application. We do not use AI or any automated tool to screen or choose applicants. We reply to every applicant by email.
Yes. You work with NEO as an independent contractor. You decide which files to accept and when you work, you pay the desk fee when it applies and your own insurance and Law Society costs, and what you earn depends on your own work. You handle your own income tax and CPP. You generally have to register for HST once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 in a single calendar quarter, or over four consecutive calendar quarters, and you can choose to register earlier. The Canada Revenue Agency’s guide for GST/HST registrants explains the tests. NEO does not deduct income tax, CPP or EI from your payments, and provides no benefits or vacation pay.
No. You accept or decline each file. We can’t promise how many files you will be offered: that depends on the work that comes to NEO and on whether it suits your practice areas.
You do, under your own licence, within the client’s instructions, court and tribunal deadlines and the Law Society’s rules. What NEO asks is about the file itself: that it is opened, kept and closed in NEO’s systems, and that the Law Society’s rules on conflicts, client money and records are met.
You do. If you give tasks on one of your files to someone at NEO who is not a licensee, you supervise that work and stay responsible for it, as rule 8.01 of the Paralegal Rules of Conduct requires.
Yes, as NEO matters at the 90% share. Each one goes through NEO’s conflict check first, signs NEO’s retainer and is billed by NEO. If you are moving from another firm, the Paralegal Rules of Conduct on changing firms apply, and we check your current client list for conflicts before you start. We may decline a matter, for example because of a conflict.
On the net fees NEO actually collects in the month: 50% on firm-sourced matters, 90% on clients you bring in, and 100% on excluded work. Each client payment is applied to HST first, then to disbursements, then to fees, and only the part that lands on fees is shared. If you are HST-registered, NEO adds HST to your share and you invoice NEO for it. The fee share page has the full terms and a calculator.
Work that you and NEO agree, in your Independent Contractor Agreement or when the matter is opened, is excluded from the fee share. 100% of the net fees NEO collects on it is yours, and nothing goes to NEO. It is still opened, billed and collected by NEO like any other matter.
Under the standard agreement, it is a new firm-sourced matter that NEO opens and assigns to you in that calendar month. Clients you bring to NEO and excluded work don’t count towards it. Your signed agreement has the exact wording. Each month’s desk fee notice shows that month’s count and whether the fee is owed or waived, so you can check it. If you disagree with the count, tell us before the due date.
No. It is a fixed monthly charge for your workspace, the firm’s systems and support: $250 plus HST ($282.50). It is waived in full for a month with fewer than 5 qualifying firm-sourced matters and for your partial first month, and it is never charged in part.
When it applies, it is due on the 1st of the following month. You can pre-authorize a card through a private billing link: nothing is charged when you add the card, and it is charged only after we have emailed you that month’s desk fee notice, never for more than you authorized. If the fee is still unpaid when your payout goes out, it is deducted from the payout.
Only fees NEO actually collects are shared. Nothing is shared on amounts still owing, refunded or written off, or on money still held in trust. If a client pays later, the share is worked out in the month the payment arrives.
Yes. You need professional liability insurance that meets the Law Society’s By-Law 6 and names you as an insured, with at least $1,000,000 per claim and $2,000,000 in the aggregate, and you show us proof before your first file. The Law Society’s page on paralegal insurance requirements sets out the rule and any exemptions.
Tell us about it when you apply, and we will talk it through before anything is signed. Work outside NEO can’t be done in NEO’s name or through NEO’s systems, and the conflict-of-interest and confidentiality rules apply to all of it.
A client can always choose who represents them, and any transfer of a file follows the Law Society’s rules. For 12 months after the agreement ends you agree not to solicit NEO clients you worked for to move their matters.
Either of us can end the agreement with 30 days’ written notice, or immediately for serious misconduct, a breach of confidentiality, or a suspension or loss of licence. Files stay with NEO and you help transfer them, and you are still paid your share of fees collected later for work you did. Remember to update your business relationships in LSO Connects.
General information only, not legal, tax or employment advice. NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is a licensed paralegal firm regulated by the Law Society of Ontario. Final terms are the ones in the signed Independent Contractor Agreement.
Each page covers one part of working through NEO.
This page describes how licensed paralegals can work with us. NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation is a licensed paralegal firm (Mo. Farooqui, Licensed Paralegal, LSO licence P21785), not a law firm. It is general information, not legal, tax or employment advice, and it is not an offer or a contract: terms apply only once a written Independent Contractor Agreement is signed by you and NEO, and where this page and the agreement differ, the agreement governs. Each paralegal remains responsible for their own obligations under the Law Society of Ontario’s rules and by-laws.
