Students and Placements Policy

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Purpose

Training the next generation of legal professionals is part of serving the public. This policy explains how NEO works with paralegal students and others on placement, while protecting clients.

Our policy

  1. Supervision. Every student is supervised by a licensed paralegal, who assigns their tasks and reviews their work before it is relied on or sent.
  2. What students may do. Under supervision: research, drafting, preparing documents, attending meetings and hearings to observe, and other tasks the supervising licensee assigns, as the Law Society's By-Laws and the student's program allow.
  3. What students may not do. Give legal advice on their own, accept clients, set fees, or appear for a client except where the rules and the court or tribunal allow it.
  4. Clear to clients. Students make clear that they are students, and clients can ask that a student not work on their matter.
  5. Confidentiality. Students agree in writing to keep client information confidential, during and after the placement, and follow our Acceptable Use of Technology Policy.
  6. Conflicts. A student's previous work and connections are checked for conflicts of interest before they work on a matter.
  7. A good placement. Students receive guidance, feedback and a fair range of work, and are treated under our Anti-Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Policy.
The rules behind this policy

Law Society of Ontario By-Law 7.1 (assignment of tasks and supervision) and the Paralegal Rules of Conduct.

Review

This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever the Law Society's By-Laws or rules change. The principal approves every change.
