Media and Public Statements Policy

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Purpose

Journalists sometimes ask about legal issues or a client's matter. This policy explains how NEO responds, protecting clients and the fairness of proceedings.

Our policy

  1. Who speaks for the firm. Only the principal, or someone the principal authorizes, speaks to the media for NEO.
  2. Client consent first. We never confirm that someone is a client, or discuss a client's matter, without the client's informed consent, and we only say what the client has agreed to.
  3. In the client's interest. We speak about a client's matter only when doing so is in the client's interest, and after explaining the risks to them.
  4. Fair proceedings. We don't make public statements that could prejudice a fair hearing, or that misstate the facts or the law.
  5. General commentary. We may comment on legal issues in general terms, as information rather than advice, following our Marketing and Advertising Policy.
  6. Accuracy. If we are quoted inaccurately, we ask for a correction.

Media enquiries

Journalists can find our fact sheet and logos in our Media Kit, and contact the office for interviews or comment.

The rules behind this policy

The Law Society of Ontario's Paralegal Rules of Conduct, including confidentiality and the rules on public appearances and statements.

Review

This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever the Law Society's By-Laws or rules change. The principal approves every change.
