Marketing and Advertising Policy

Purpose

Marketing helps people find legal help, but it must never mislead them. This policy sets the standards for everything NEO publishes: the website, the knowledge base, social media, emails, advertisements and printed material.

Who it applies to

Every licensee, employee and contractor, and every agency or service that prepares marketing for the firm.

Our standards

Everything we publish must be:

1. True, accurate and verifiable. We only make claims we can prove, and we keep the evidence.
2. Not misleading, confusing or deceptive, including by leaving things out.
3. Free of unjustified expectations. We don't promise outcomes, and we don't suggest that past results predict future ones.
4. In the public interest and consistent with a high standard of professionalism.

In practice

• Our title. We describe ourselves as licensed paralegals. We never hold ourselves out as lawyers, and we don't call ourselves specialists or experts in a way the rules don't allow.
• Scope. We only advertise services a paralegal is permitted to provide, and we say clearly when a matter needs a lawyer.
• Prices. Advertised fees say what is included, and that HST and disbursements are extra.
• Reviews and testimonials. Only genuine reviews from real clients, shown with their consent, never written or edited by us, and never paid for.
• Statistics, ratings and awards. Only figures and awards that are real, current and verifiable, with their source.
• Client information. Nothing that identifies a client or their matter without their written consent.
• Email and texts. Commercial messages follow our Anti-Spam Policy.

Checking before we publish

The principal approves marketing before it is published, and reviews the website regularly to correct anything that is out of date.

Review

This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever the Law Society's By-Laws or rules change. The principal approves every change.
