Radar & Laser Evidence in Traffic Court

How Speed Detection Works

Police officers in Ontario use radar and laser devices to measure the speed of moving vehicles.

  • Radar — Radio waves are bounced off a moving vehicle to determine its speed.
  • Laser (LIDAR) — Pulsed laser light is used to precisely measure the speed and distance of a specific vehicle.

Challenging the Evidence

  • Calibration Logs — All speed detection devices must be properly calibrated and tested.
  • Officer Training — The officer must be trained and certified to use the specific device.
  • Device Interference — Environmental factors and interference from other vehicles can affect the accuracy of the reading.
