Illegal Lockouts in Ontario

Tenant Rights

In Ontario, a landlord cannot lock you out of your apartment without a valid eviction order from the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB).

Landlord Prohibitions

  • Changing Locks — A landlord cannot change the locks to prevent you from entering the unit without your consent.
  • Cutting Utilities — A landlord cannot cut off your electricity, heat, or water.
  • Taking Belongings — A landlord cannot take or dispose of your personal property without your permission.

What to Do

If you have been illegally locked out, contact the police and then the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB). You may be entitled to an emergency order to get back into your home and for compensation for your losses.
