Strict Consumer Protection Laws
In Ontario, the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) gives you a 'cooling-off' period to cancel most contracts signed at your home without a reason.
- The 10-Day Period — You have exactly 10 days to cancel a contract after receiving a written copy.
- The Products — Water heaters, HVAC systems, and other home services are most common.
- The Ban — Since 2018, most door-to-door sales of these products are BANNED in Ontario.
How to Cancel
- Written Notice — You must provide a written cancellation notice (email, mail, or fax) within the 10-day period.
- Reason for Cancellation — You don't need a reason to cancel during the cooling-off period.
- No Cancellation Fee — The business cannot charge you any cancellation fees.
The Extended 1-Year Period
- Missing Information — If the contract is missing required information (like the price or the business address).
- Unfair Practices — If the business used high-pressure tactics or made false claims.
- Illegal Sales — If the product or service was part of the banned list.
