Urgent Matters Policy

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Purpose

Some legal problems can't wait: an eviction notice, a court date tomorrow, a deadline that has nearly passed. This policy explains how NEO handles urgent matters.

Telling us it's urgent

Call us, or send a request through our Contact page, and say that it is urgent. Send a photo or copy of every page of the document you received, and tell us when and how you received it.

What we do

  1. Same-day intake for most matters. We aim to review urgent requests the same business day and connect you with a paralegal as quickly as possible.
  2. Deadline first. We work out the deadline and what is at stake before anything else, and tell you what must happen next.
  3. Conflict check and identity. We still check for conflicts and verify identity before we act, as the Law Society requires. Having your ID ready helps.
  4. The first step. Where we can act in time, we focus on the step that protects your position, such as filing a defence, asking for an adjournment or a review, or a motion.

What we can't promise

We can't guarantee to act on every urgent matter in time, especially outside business hours or when the deadline has already passed, and we can't act until a retainer is in place. If we can't help in time, we will tell you quickly so you can look elsewhere.

Missed a deadline?

Contact us anyway. There may still be options, such as asking to set aside a default or extend time.

The rules behind this policy

The Law Society of Ontario's Paralegal Rules of Conduct, including competence and quality of service, and By-Law 7.1.

Review

This policy is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever the Law Society's By-Laws or rules change. The principal approves every change.
