Undertakings Policy

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Purpose

An undertaking is a personal promise by a legal professional to do, or not do, something. Other representatives, courts and tribunals rely on them. This policy explains how NEO gives and keeps undertakings.

Our policy

  1. Only what we can fulfil. We give an undertaking only if it is within our control and we are sure we can fulfil it.
  2. In writing. Undertakings are given, or confirmed promptly, in writing, with clear wording about what is promised and by when.
  3. Clear about whose promise it is. If a promise depends on our client, for example to provide a document the client has, we say so plainly, and don't give it as our own personal undertaking.
  4. Always honoured. Every undertaking we give is fulfilled on time. If something prevents it, we tell the person who relied on it at once and agree how to put it right.
  5. Recorded. Undertakings are recorded on the client's file, with a reminder of the date they are due.
  6. Undertakings given to us. We rely on undertakings from others only when they are clear, and we follow up if they aren't fulfilled.
