Purpose
Not every client needs, or can afford, full representation. A limited scope retainer lets a client hire us for part of a matter: reviewing a document, preparing a form, coaching for a hearing, or attending one step. This policy explains how we offer it responsibly, as the Paralegal Rules of Conduct require.
Who it applies to
Every licensee who offers or provides limited scope services.
Our policy
- Honest advice first. Before agreeing to a limited scope retainer, we explain what we will and won't do, and whether the matter can sensibly be handled that way. If it can't, we say so.
- In writing. The scope is confirmed in writing: the tasks we will do, the tasks the client will do, and the fee.
- The client's part. The client remains responsible for every step outside our scope, including deadlines, filings and attending hearings we aren't attending. We point out the deadlines we know of.
- Same standards. Within the agreed scope, we owe the client the same duties as in any matter: competence, confidentiality, avoiding conflicts and honest communication.
- Changing the scope. If the client wants more help, we agree the new scope and fee in writing before doing more.
Examples
- Reviewing a Small Claims Court claim or defence the client drafted.
- Preparing Landlord and Tenant Board forms for the client to file.
- A coaching session before a hearing the client will attend alone.
- Our written document review service.
