DUI First Offence: Back on Track Program

Mandatory Remedial Program

In Ontario, if you are convicted of an alcohol or drug-related impaired driving offence, you must complete the Back on Track program before your licence can be reinstated.

  • Assessment — A one-on-one meeting to determine which program is best for you (education vs. treatment).
  • Education/Treatment — A series of workshops or counselling sessions (8 to 16 hours).
  • Follow-up — A final assessment and progress report.

The Reinstatement Process

  • The Conviction — You will receive an immediate licence suspension (usually 1 year for a first offence).
  • The Cost — The program costs approximately $634, and you must pay for it yourself.
  • The Timing — It can take up to 11 months to complete the program, so you must start as soon as possible.

Ignition Interlock Rules

  • Mandatory Interlock — Most DUI offenders must have an ignition interlock device (a breathalyzer connected to the starter) installed for at least 1 year after reinstatement.
  • The Cost — You must pay for the installation, monthly rental, and removal of the device (approx. $1,500 - $2,000 per year).
  • The Violation — Any attempt to bypass the device can result in further charges and suspensions.
