For Ontario lawyers

Receive referrals from NEO

We are a licensed paralegal firm. When a client’s matter, or part of it, is one a licensed paralegal is not permitted to handle, we tell the client and can recommend Ontario lawyers to them. If you would like to be one of the lawyers we may recommend, tell us about your practice below.

What sending a request means

A way for Ontario lawyers to put their practice forward. It is not a directory, a listing or a membership.

How we choose whom to recommend

Each recommendation depends on the client’s matter: the area of law, where the client is, the language they need and whether the lawyer can take it on. Where we reasonably can, we recommend more than one licensee, and the client chooses whether to retain anyone.

We recommend lawyers based on suitability for the client’s matter. Agreeing to pay a referral fee is never a condition of receiving referrals, and approval is not a partnership or affiliation.

No fees, and no obligation either way

  • There is nothing to pay to send a request or to be among the lawyers we refer to: no listing, subscription or sign-up fee.
  • Approval does not commit you to take any matter, and it is not a promise that any referral will follow.
  • You may decline any referral, and we may decide a matter is better referred to someone else.
  • You can ask us to stop recommending you at any time.

If a referral fee applies

The Law Society of Ontario’s limits, in the words of its Referral Fee Checklist.

  • The amount of the referral fee does not exceed 15% of the legal fees paid for the first $50,000 of fees for the matter and 5% of the remaining balance of fees for the matter to a maximum referral fee of $25,000.
  • The referral fee is fair and reasonable and does not increase the total amount of the fee payable by the client.
  • No referral fee will be paid or payable until the licensee receiving the referral is paid by the referred client for the legal services provided.

For example, at most $3,000 on $20,000 of fees and $10,000 on $100,000, never more than $25,000. The limit is a ceiling, not a set rate. Any fee is set out in the Law Society’s Referral Agreement, signed by the client, by you and by us, and the client receives the Law Society’s information sheet on referral fees.

Your request

Professional contact details only, please. We use them to review your request and to reach you about referrals.

Areas you practise in (tick all that apply)

For example: Durham Region and Toronto in person, and anywhere in Ontario by video.

Referral fees (optional)

You may leave this blank. Your answer does not affect whether we recommend you: agreeing to pay a referral fee is never a condition of receiving referrals from us.

Please do not include client names or any confidential information.

We use these details only to review your request and, if we add you to the lawyers we may recommend, to contact you about referrals. You will not be added to any mailing list. See our Privacy Policy.

After you send your request

Every request is read by a person. Nothing is approved automatically.

  1. We review your request

We read it ourselves and check your status on the Law Society of Ontario directory. We may write to you with a question or two.

  2. We reply by email

We let you know whether we will add you to the lawyers we may recommend. If we don’t, there is nothing further you need to do.

  3. A client may be referred to you

When a client’s matter suits your practice and location, we may recommend you to the client. The client decides whether to contact you and whether to retain you.

  4. You decide whether to act

You run your own conflict check, agree your fee and retainer directly with the client and, for each client we refer, sign the Law Society’s Referral Agreement with the client and us. If a referral fee applies, it comes out of your fee, only after the client has paid you, and it never increases what the client pays.

Each licensee keeps their own obligations

Once you take on a client we referred, the matter is yours: you decide whether you can act, you open the file and agree the retainer with the client, and you meet your own duties under the Law Society of Ontario’s rules. This page is general information about how we work with lawyers; it is not legal advice, and sending a request does not create a referral, an agreement or any other relationship. We are NEO Legal Services Professional Corporation, a licensed paralegal firm (Mo. Farooqui, Licensed Paralegal, LSO licence P21785), and we are not a law firm.
