Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

The fee is $60 plus 13% HST ($67.80 in all) for the work described on this page. Court, tribunal or government fees and other disbursements are extra. We confirm the scope and the fee in a written retainer agreement before any work starts.

What happens when I check out?

You book a time for your intake call, then save a card on Stripe's secure page. Nothing is charged today: the card is only charged later, for an invoice for work already done, as your retainer agreement sets out. A licensed paralegal confirms the details, checks for conflicts of interest and, if we can act for you, sends the retainer agreement. Fees paid before the work is done are held in our trust account.

Is a consent letter required by law?

Canada does not require one by law, but the Government of Canada recommends it, and border officers or airlines may ask for it.

Who should sign the letter?

Usually each parent or guardian who is not travelling with the child. If there is a custody or parenting order, bring a copy.

Important limitations

  • The office receiving the document decides whether it accepts it
  • A document cannot be commissioned if identity cannot be confirmed or the signer does not understand it
  • Commissioning does not check or confirm the contents
  • The firm commissions and witnesses documents as Ontario law allows, but does not draft or advise on documents outside a licensed paralegal's scope, such as wills, powers of attorney or real estate documents; that work is referred to an Ontario lawyer.
