Licence Plate Renewal in Ontario: No Stickers, but Still Required

No more stickers doesn't mean no more renewals. Here is what Ontario drivers still need to do to keep their plates valid.

Since March 13, 2022, Ontario no longer requires licence plate stickers on passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds, and it removed the renewal fee for them. But the plate permit must still be renewed.

The short answer

Keep your plate permit current. Renewal is free for most personal vehicles and is often automatic if you meet the conditions, but you can still be ticketed for driving with an expired plate permit.

Why renewal still matters

  • An expired plate permit can lead to a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Renewal is when your insurance and unpaid fines are checked.

Many eligible vehicles are renewed automatically if, for example, the insurance is valid and there are no unpaid fines, tolls or emissions issues. Check that your address with ServiceOntario is up to date so you get the notices.

When it won't renew

  • Unpaid fines or tolls on your record
  • No valid insurance on file
  • Commercial vehicles, which have different rules and fees

How to check

Look up your vehicle's renewal date with ServiceOntario online, and renew there if it hasn't happened automatically.

Got a ticket?

If the plate was expired because of a mistake, for example a change of address, renew right away and get advice before paying the ticket.
