A record suspension (formerly called a pardon) sets aside your criminal record in the RCMP database, keeping it separate and apart from other criminal records. It does not erase the record, but it prevents it from showing up in most background checks and can open doors to employment, housing, and travel.
The Parole Board of Canada (PBC) grants record suspensions under the Criminal Records Act. Provinces cannot grant federal record suspensions — provincial pardons apply only to provincial offences.
| Offence Type | Waiting Period |
|---|---|
| Summary conviction | 5 years after sentence completed |
| Indictable offence | 10 years after sentence completed |
| Schedule 1 sex offences (involving children) | Not eligible |
| More than 3 indictable offences | Not eligible |
"Sentence completed" means fines paid, probation served, and any supervised release finished.
